There may come a time in your life when you have either choose or a forced to relocate from your familiar surroundings to a new city or even a new country. Perhaps it’s because you decide you need a change of pace or maybe it’s because your work is forcing you to move.

Either way, it is a huge wrench and requires a lot of guts, determination and organisation. It doesn’t have to be a nightmare though, there are a lot of benefits in relocating, not least the new places and experiences you have to look forward to. So how can you minimise the impact on your life and make is as smooth and as enjoyable a transition as possible?

Here are a few tips you could use to help you get better acquainted with your new home. Let’s say you’re relocating to Manchester in the UK.

The very first thing you should do when you know where you are going to relocate to is visit the place. Get yourself over to your new city, more than once if you can, and familiarise yourself with it. Eat in several different places, go for a drink in a few different bars, shop around a bit and don’t be afraid of getting lost. The more often you can do this before you finally move, the more at home you will feel when you arrive and this is, after all, the whole point!

While you’re visiting you should contact the local council, Chamber of Commerce and similar organisations for advice on the city’s various districts and neighbourhoods, best schools and that sort of thing. They can, if you need it, introduce you to local businesses looking for employees and can even help you find a good Manchester estate agent if you’re still looking for a place to live.

Grab a copy of the various local newspapers. In Manchester, for example, a good place to start is the Manchester Evening News but you should also try to get hold of copies of other newspapers too. The Metro is a free newspaper in Manchester and packed full of news and information. You will earn all about the local news and gossip, homes for sale or rent and events in the city that you can get to right away, making it easier for you to feel at home.

Money is always going to be an issue when relocating and it is important you assess your budget and adjust to the prices and average cost of living of your new city. In the case of Manchester, if you’re relocating from London you’ll likely find you have a lot more disposable income but if you’re moving from the country somewhere you are likely to find things a whole lot more expensive! Checking first will reduce the shock and allow you to settle in easier.

Finally, once you’ve moved in set about making friends as quickly as possible. That means getting out and meeting people but also inviting people back to your new home for dinner, drinks, whatever you feel confident in hosting! Throw a housewarming party and invite your new colleagues, join a club or two, basically be as active as possible. It will reduce loneliness and before you know it your new city won’t be new anymore. It’ll just be home.
