His cell phone does not work out there and buyng calling cards are getting expensive. Is there a way he can call straight home and the charges included in some separate bill. ? i heard there is something like a home number we can rent/purchase? …and its less expensive. we need something so he can call me more often without having problems? I will appreciate any help in the matter. Thank you.

Contact this place and see what they have. I think they have a phone you can rent/buy where calls can be placed to the U.S. for only one dollar per call (no time limit) http://www.mexitel.net/
If he has a number where you can call him, Sprint Cellular has a Mexico calling plan where you can make unlimited calls to landlines in mexico very cheap. and it’s also the cheapest way that I have found to call Mexican cell phones. (around 13 cents per minute) the plan price will vary depending on where in Mexico you need to call. my plan only costs $5.00 per month extra on my regular cell bill.
I have been fighting this for several years. we moved to Rosarito and I am in Phoenix, Az often for extended periods of time working. my wife has a small plan on our home phone and also through Tel-Cel on our cell phones where she can call me fairly cheap in case of an emergency, but I think it’s only like a 15 minute block of time for around 5-10 dollars. if I can be of any further help, feel free to shoot me an e-mail.
Yes, there is a way. I live in Mexico, I hate Telmex, so I use Vonage, and my sweetheart and I talk to each other from Mx.to CA and Uk very often. The price is a reasonable monthly charge under 30 dollars and unlimited calls.
Telmex has a package that allows 55 minutes of international calls for no additional charge. I think there is one that has unlimited international calls also.

Another possibility is skype. It doesn’t cost anything if you call computer to computer.
There’s a few options that might work for you.
The idea of Vonage isn’t bad, but if he’s got an internet connection, and even cheaper option might be Skype. I use Skype extensively and it’s great for international calls. If you and he BOTH set up Skype accounts, your calls to each other can be FREE. (Need to have a Skype-compatible headset for each of you…I think I paid $29 for mine, but that was a year or 2 ago.)
Another option is to just use the internet cafes, most of which do long-distance calls too. These are found everywhere and don’t require any hassles of setting up accounts, making minimum monthly payments, etc., etc. Just walk in, call, and pay a low price.
Using Ladatel cards isn’t too expensive these days either. I paid 5 pesos per minute last week to call from a Telmex pay phone to anywhere in the U.S. or Canada. That’s only like 40 cents a minute…not too bad.
Just a few options…
I agree with the person who said Vonage.
All you need to do is sign up and send the modem down to Mexico (or take it there when you visit him).
I also have the 30/month deal and use it for work.
